Food waste is an enormous problem in the US. Nearly one third of all food produced is lost or wasted due to bad habits and uneducated consumers. The average person grocery shops once a week and is often uninformed on the lifespan of their products. The risk of consuming spoiled food is so high that people are overly cautious and end up throwing away food that is often still viable.
There are a lot of factors that contribute to food freshness and without a customized system, it’s difficult to figure out. The challenge was to create a solution that empowers individuals to make a change in the way they consume their food.
