Since the lottery began in 2006, it has contributed more than $6.6 billion (as of 8/19/19) to education programs in North Carolina. Over $700 million was provided last year alone, that’s nearly $2 million each day. However, many people are unaware of the way in which lottery dollars benefit students. The challenge was to create awareness for the non-profit nature of the lottery by encouraging players to be involved in choosing where those dollars are spent.
NC School Heroes is a program that gives North Carolina public school employees the chance to be honored and celebrated. Anyone in the state can go online to nominate and vote for someone they believe is a School Hero. Winners receive $10,000 for themselves and $10,000 for their school. This creates engagement within the community and raises awareness for their charitable aspect of NCEL.
